Sediment and Erosion Control 101 with Alex Zimmerman, CPESC, CISEC, CESSWI

Join the IECA Edmonton Regional Event September 13-14 in Edmonton, Alberta to Learn Best Management Practices for Project Success. Construction sequencing can be just as important as any traditional best management practice. Using BMPs at the right time requires planning and cooperation with the construction scheduling. The proper sequence of best management practices is as important as the practice itself. This two day training includes the proper use installation and scheduling of best management practices to properly sequence projects of all sizes and types for productivity and risk management. With proper sequencing the project can benefit from increased productivity and contractor profitability. Focus will be paid to the protection of low impact development practices during the construction process. Attendees will attend a field trip to real projects to explore BMPs in action.

Alex Zimmerman CPESC, CISEC, CESSWI, AK-BC-NT-WA-CESCL Alex Zimmerman has been working in the construction and restoration field for over 20 years. He is active in training and development for the construction and stormwater industry and frequently presents at conferences and trade shows. His dynamic presentations offer real world experience and provide attendees with practical tools and techniques to assist in managing challenges in their work environments.

The topics that will be discussed include:

Impacts of Erosion and the Factors that Influence it
Understanding the impacts of erosion and the influencing factors guides the design and implementation of proper erosion and sediment control planning and implementation. When site conditions or schedules change the same plan or management practices may to be adjusted. Participants will better understand the fundamentals effective erosion and sediment control risk management.

The Best of the Best Management Practices
Beyond silt fence, as technology improves and better outcomes are required by regulators and owners alike the same, tired, old ineffective BMPs are no longer favorable. While simple and effective is preferred on occasion chemical treatment may be necessary. This presentation will cover from the simple to the best of the best for both erosion prevention and sediment control.

Inspection and Documentation
With the ever expanding liability for site operators demonstrating due diligence is critical to protect owners, and operators alike. While regulations drive minimum inspection and documentation requirements the standard of duly diligent  mandates a higher level of documentation. This presentation will review the regulatory requirements and discuss the necessary documentation to demonstrate compliance.

Biotic Soil Amendments for Site Reclamation
The process of site restoration has experienced difficulty is achieving the desired outcomes in all site conditions. In recent years with better understanding of the soil conditions has moved the field of site seeding away from the days of "spray and pray." By replacing the microbial communities that are often lost during grading and stockpiling activities sites can better build healthy soils and cycle nutrients for long term vegetation success. This presentation will cover the current standards of practice and discuss how we can simply amend our applications for successful outcomes.

On the tour you will gain a better understanding of different soil types. You can touch and feel the difference between a clay loam soil, or a sandy loam soil. How soil particle sizes effect erosion and sediment on your construction sites. We will look at some Erosion Control best management practices (BMP’s). How to soil roughen, how to track pack properly, seeding, Hydroseeding, and how to install a (RECP) rolled erosion control product properly. We will also look at some Sediment control BMP’s which will include silt fences, sediment basins and ponds, and vehicle tracking pads. By the end of the tour you will understand how sediment controls are used to minimize eroded soils. And that Erosion controls are used to dissipate energy and divert surface runoff. You will also gain knowledge in how to maintain your BMP’s, which ones are most cost effective, and which ones work best in our Alberta climate?

IECA Cancellation & Transfer Policy

Requests for registration refunds or transfers must be submitted to IECA in writing. For cancellations prior to 30 days from the event a $50 processing fee will be applied. For cancellations 30 days and less from the event date there will be no refund. Transfer of registrations are encouraged and subject to a $30 processing fee.
